What kinds of movies are more likely to get high score ?

In our daily life, there are lots of movies released around the world every day.

However, it is hard to know if it of high quality or low quality unless it has been released for a long time.

But watching the excellent movies the first time can be the best experience.

In this data story, it analyzes 5000 movies data from IMDB and then gives some common features of high score English movies that released between 2010-2016, which may help people to predict the quality of new movies before releasing.

Now you can move to the next page to see the visualization charts of this story!

Think about the movies you watched recent years, you will find that although more and more movies are produced in a year, it is harder to find a movie with high quality. The line chart on your left hand shows the average IMDB score and the number of movies from 1916 to 2016.

It is clear that the number of movies dramatically increased with time. Conversely, the average score slightly decreased within these years. This indicates that the quality of the movies is declining year by year or the audience is becoming more and more strict with the quality.

Based on this, no matter which reason is right, it is helpful to conclude some common features of high-quality movies.

The words cloud on the left shows the frequency of movie genres occurred among all these high score movies (A movie may belong to 1-3 genres).

By comparing the size of these words, we can find that DRAMA, ADVENTURE and COMEDY movies are more likely to get high scores.

ATTENTION PLEASE: SLIDE this page LEFT to check another two charts!

In this page, here display three bar charts, You can slide this page left and right to look at another two charts.

The first chart displayed on the left shows the average scores given by different age groups of all of the audiences. There are three obvious trends after comparing the width of the bars vertical and horizontal.

  1. In any genre, the first group give the highest score, thus we can say people under 18 tend to give a higher score when evaluating movies.
  2. Conversely, the fourth group give the lowest score, thus the people aged above 45 are very strict when giving scores.
  3. Besides, only in the fourth column has a distinctly longest strip, it is reasonable to say that the preference becomes apparent with age.

Interaction Tips: 1. You can put your mouse on the bars to check the score given by different age groups of a certain genre. 2. You can use the x-axis label as a filter to show/hide age groups. 3. You can use the toolbox in the top right corner to download the chart as an image.

The second bar chart illustrates the average scores of every genre given by female audiences of different age groups.

If we set 7.5 as a boundary score, we can get:

  1. Female under 18 years old prefer adventure, mystery and thriller movies.
  2. Female aged 18-29 prefer mystery and music movies.
  3. Female aged 30-44 prefer mystery, music, romance and sport movies.
  4. Female aged above 45 prefer mystery, romance, sport and thriller movies.

Overall, MYSTERY movies are most likely to get high scores among female, and the next three preferred movie genres for women are MUSIC, SPORT and THRILLER.

The third bar chart illustrates the average scores of every genre given by male audiences of different age groups.

If we set 7.75 as a boundary score, we can get:

  1. Male under 18 years old prefer mystery, action, biography and fantasy movies.
  2. Male aged 18-29 prefer mystery, animation and sport movies.
  3. Male aged 30-44 prefer mystery movies.
  4. Male aged above 45 prefer mystery movies.

Overall, MYSTERY movies are most likely to get high score among male.

It is worth to mention that The types of movies that female audiences like are significantly more diverse than male. And to my surprise, in the female audience, sport and thriller get higher average scores than other genres in every age group.

Next, the scatter plot gives information about the budgets and the scores of all the high score English movies and using different colors to separate different genres. Each point represents a movie and each color stands for a genre. Besides, this chart marks the minimum score, the maximum score and the average score of every genre.

Because the number of data points of some of the genres in high score movies are quite small, it is unreasonable to speculate the relation between their budgets and scores. Fortunately, after calculating the linear regression equation of each genre, there is a relatively strong positive linear relationship between budget and IMDB score of ACTION movies(The p-value of the trend line is 0.02).

Interaction Tips: 1. You can use the legend on the left side of the chart panel as a filter to show/highlight/hide some data points to have a clear view of the distribution of data points of particular genres and explore the data yourself. 2. You can use the toolbox in the top right corner to zoom some area of the data points, check the data used in this chart or downloads this chart as an image.

This relationship force graph shows the collaborative relationship of directors and actors.

There are two obvious large groups of nodes in this graph (You can check them yourself). This means if you see a combination of director and actors is in these groups, it is probably a high-quality movie.

Interaction Tips: 1. You can put your mouse on a node, the chart will highlight a group of nodes and links of this node, and there will prompt the information of this node. 2. You can drag a group of nodes out of the circle to see the relationship of this group clearly.
